When School Culture Slips: Red Flags and a Practical Diagnostic

An Interactive Leadership Check for School Culture

Culture rarely slips all at once. More often, it changes through small daily shifts: more pressure, less clarity, more reactivity, less trust.

This self-assessment is designed to help leaders reflect on how their school may currently be experienced from four critical angles:

  • student experience
  • parent experience
  • teacher experience
  • leadership direction

Rate each statement from 1 to 5:

  • 1 = rarely true
  • 2 = occasionally true
  • 3 = sometimes true
  • 4 = often true
  • 5 = consistently true

Answer based on lived experience, not intention.

This assessment is private and reflective. It is designed to help you identify blind spots early, notice where culture may be under strain, and understand where your school feels strongest or most vulnerable.
Student Experience

1. Students feel safe asking questions without fear of embarrassment.

2. Students are not overwhelmed by workload or constant testing.

3. Behaviour systems feel fair, proportionate and respectful to students.

4. Quiet or coping students who are struggling are likely to be noticed early.

Parent Experience

5. Parents feel informed without feeling overwhelmed.

6. Parents feel comfortable raising concerns and expect a constructive response.

7. Parents trust that wellbeing is genuinely prioritised, not only stated.

Leadership and Direction

13. The school has a clear shared vision beyond just results.

14. Improvement strategies are thoughtful rather than reactive.
